Beyond Colour: Expressionism and Printmaking

A guest curation by Galerie Henze & Ketterer, Switzerland.

With the emergence of expressionism at the beginning of the 20th century, the subjective and emotional expressiveness of the artist suddenly took center stage. Strong colours dominated by subjective feelings are usually among the characteristics of expressionist art. However, woodcuts, etchings and lithographs can also be characterized by direct expression. This is achieved through strong contours, rough forms and the expressive power of the individual lines, which simplify the figurative and is particularly evident in the medium of printmaking. The selected graphic works show how an individual feeling and a subjective perception of the “Brücke” artists is expressively depicted without colours.
