“Sunset 1” by Alex Katz, a Brooklyn-born figurative painter, renowned for his use of bold solid color and streamlined form. This piece, from the Sunrise Sunset portfolio, masterfully displays Katz’s signature ability to distill a scene to its most fundamental aesthetic elements; against a soft gradient of muted blues and yellows, a jagged, disintegrating black form suggests trees swaying in the wind. The piece recalls the flatness and cropped composition of Japanese wood-block prints, a major influence of Katz’s, and shares a similar emotional resonance in its stark simplicity. Despite uncharacteristically verging on the abstract, the piece remains distinctly within Katz’s virtuosic oeuvre. Measuring 55 inches tall by 32 inches wide, the limited edition print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
