Alison Saar carefully considers the physicality, conceptuality, and the history of the materials she chooses to work with. For this piece, Saar chose a flecked Chiri kozo paper. After the portrait was printed, the paper was treated with coats of shellac to achieve a stained quality. During the process of creating this print, Alison Saar said, “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t is about being racially ambiguous and gender fluid, so I was thinking of the paper being skin-like and translucent as an important component of the piece.”
