The series Dust (2022) visualizes the process of combustion.
This touches on themes of dissolution and new beginnings as well as the cycle of life and materials.
Do we see a space image of a distant galaxy in the work?
No. Andreas Gefeller used a high-speed flash to photograph cinders thrown into the air, which are produced during the incineration of residual waste. Gefeller enlarged these tiny particles and made them visible to the eye in the first place. He photographed them in the Düsseldorf waste incineration plant.
The work captures an everyday moment in human civilization that is both fleeting and essential.
It thus refers to the current debates on dealing with raw materials or climate change.
