Uccello’s depiction of Saint George as a damsel in distress, or persecuted maiden, is a classic theme in world literature, art, and film. Andy Warhol re-appropriated Uccello’s painting of St. George and the Dragon, by transforming it into a work of pop art.By implementing bright, psychedelic colors in place of the classic neutrals that characterize the original work, Andy Warhol appropriated a classic work of art into a pop art masterpiece.
PAOLO UCCELLO ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON FS II324 AS PART OF ANDY WARHOL’S LARGER BODY OF WORK
Andy Warhol created this work when he lived in New York during the mid-1980s. During this time, Warhol was forming bonds with a number of younger artists in the New York art scene including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel and David Salle. Warhol saw a re-emergence of critical and financial success during this period of his life. Other series produced during this period are the Endangered Species series, Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, and the Shoes series.
