Mother E. is my love for the Earth, our home. It is taken after the screen saver that was on your laptop when I was at Wildwood. I have always been taken with the image of Earth from space—how it is green and blue. Once again there is such fragileness to it. And it is in each of us too—where would we be without her? I have been rolling that idea around in my head for years and it finally popped out. I am grateful for the opportunity you presented to me—it was very freeing to just make images that seemed very spontaneous. I am now pursuing some of these ideas with the new paintings, things that we carry in our awareness, things that seem to always be there and seem to expand. How do they become manifest in a visual sense? That is always the surprise.”

The Artist

Anne Appleby

Anne Appleby (b. 1954, Harrisburg, PA) studied at Philadelphia College of Art before relocating to Montana in 1971, subsequently earning her BFA at the University of Montana, Missoula, and eventually establishing a studio and residence in the sparsely populated community of Jefferson City. In addition to receiving her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1989, Appleby’s educational background includes a fifteen-year apprenticeship with Ojibwa artist and holy man Ed Barbeau, with whom she learned and refined processes of intense meditative awareness in nature. The tenor of Appleby’s work reflects the sensation of that observational practice and resides at the core of her philosophical approach to painting.
