Born in London in 1932, Anne Madden spent her early childhood in Chile before returning to London where she studied at the Chelsea School of Art and Crafts. She began to exhibit in the 1950s and in 1958 she married the painter Louis le Brocquy and moved to the South of France. In 1965 Anne Madden represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale. She is an elected member of Aosdána.
Among developments in the artist’s work are the poured paintings (1960s); the human-scale elegiac Megalith series (1970s); Openings (1980s); the Odyssey & Icarus sequences (1990s); the Garden of Love paintings and the latest Aurora Borealis paintings. Her book, Louis le Brocquy, Seeing His Way, was published in 1993 by Gill & Macmillan. She has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions and her work is represented in numerous public collections including: George Pompidou Centre, Paris; Maeght Foundation Saint-Paul; Picasso Museum, Antibes; Museum of Modern Art, Paris; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC; Neuberger Museum, New York; Irish Museum of Modern Art; Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Ulster Museum, Belfast. The Irish Museum of Modern Art held a major retrospective of her work in 2007. Anne Madden now lives and works in Dublin.
