Original woodcut in black ink. Signed, numbered (17) from the very small edition of 30 and dated 1991 in pencil on the reverse by the artist. Total edition of 40 impressions (30 plus 10 proofs). Also annotated on the reverse ‘IV’ (No.4). From the series ‘Bearing Light’. Published by Okeanos Editions, 1990/1991 Los Angeles. Printed at La Paloma, 1990 Tujunga California. Superb impression displaying the texture of the wood grain. On cream Stonehenge paper. Excellent condition, unframed. Sheet: 496 x 572mm. (19 ½ x 22 ½ ins.)

“BEARING LIGHT was a response to the physical act of printing: an image that leaves it’s own trace of weight on the paper. I wanted to return to the origins of printing: wood ink and paper. Several of the prints carry the traces of the nails with which the wooden plates were assembled, similar to the cut-outs pioneered by Gauguin and Munch.”

The Artist

Antony Gormley

Antony Gormley is most well-known for his sculpture ‘The Angel of the North’, which stands in Gateshead in the north of England. Other public works include ‘Another Place’ on Crosby Beach near Liverpool and ‘Event Horizon’, which has been shown at many sites across the world: London, Madison Square in New York, Sao Paulo in Brazil and Hong Kong. Gormley was born in London in 1950. His artistic studies began at Trinity College Cambridge in the late 1960s, where he studied History of Art. Before continuing with his creative pursuits, he travelled through Asia for three years to immerse himself in Buddhism.
