Gaussian is the second collaboration between Manifold Editions and renowned British artist, Boo Saville, inspired by the artist’s ongoing series of colourfield paintings. Saville says, “I have been out walking a lot during lockdown and starting in the studio very early. The shifts of light as dawn breaks inspired this work. The way we can look to nature and to our environment at times of stress. To look and wonder to something larger than oneself has helped me through difficult times. This is my attempt at bringing some of that outside in and to embrace the ambiguity and randomness of the world.” The title Gaussian is a mathematical function which enables a balanced distribution of random variables. Saville refers to this theory when creating her colourfields to form perfectly smooth blends of colour. The density of the pigments around the edge of the image enable the eye to read, rest and refer to the colour shifts towards the centre. The resulting work is at once energising while retaining a sense of calm and balance.
