A new work by our young lithographer who was the 2019 winner of the Jerwood Printmaking Today Prize. This beautiful litho is three dimensional encased in a perspex box and captures the whimsical imagination of three little boys. The accompanying text: “Dear Teacher, today I played spying again with my friends Yuki and Kou. Kou said “Shhh! Look at this” so we looked. It was a naked woman watching TV. “She looks like a banana” said Yuki. I thought so too”.

The Artist

Chika Osaka

Chika Osaka was born in Tokyo in 1984 where she still lives. She graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in painting, and went on to gain a Masters degree in print-making. She studied under the lithography print-making master Takemi Azumaya and it was due to his influence that Osaka chose lithography as her print-making medium. She says that in metal plate lithography she can show minute details, work with a fluidity of colours and can add other methods such as embossing. Osaka’s works are frequently beautifully and brightly coloured with details of human figures. Unusually for an artist, the artist starts not by sketching but by writing a sentence or paragraph taken from everyday occurrences. She then creates a soliloquy around these words within an imaginary scene. Each image is inspired and accompanied by her written word. Osaka has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Japan, in Munich, Bern and in London. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts. Tokyo; Zhejiang Art Museum, China; Peninsula Art Museum, Shanghai.
