Much of Chitra Merchant’s works use ancient Indian historical sites as a source of inspiration from which to root and develop imaginal structures that take on a life and logic of their own. Merchant is deeply interested in the metaphor of a ‘Temple’, ruined or whole, as an outward manifestation of an inner value.

In these screenprints, an intense feeling for a colour often forms the starting point. The textures and patterns used here reference 17th and 18th Century Indian art of the Marwar idiom, noted for their richly detailed landscapes that mapped metaphorical spaces.

Artist Sales: This work is sold by the artist. The sale is facilitated by RA Enterprises (RAE) for which RAE receives a commission from the artist only.
