This new limited edition by Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy, is available exclusively through the Academy’s Art Sales programme. The repertoire of motifs (such as the horse, wing and disc) with which Le Brun’s work have long been associated enforce his strong attachment to the imagery and emotional address of Romanticism and Symbolism.
His paintings ask the viewer to consider not only the compelling imagery he employs, but also the poetic and structural processes through which the work is created. This new woodcut embraces developments in Le Brun’s practice which see him working in a more gestural, expressionistic manner, with a circular motif still faintly visible amidst the artist’s energetic mark-making.
Unusually, the image was transferred from woodblock to paper using the pressure of the back of a domestic metal spoon, in the absence of a printing press. This gives it a unique, handmade quality. Conceived and proofed in Le Brun’s studio, the edition was then completed in the RA Schools.
