A unique color trial proof (aside from the edition of 60 which was printed in a single color) on white Hodgkinson handmade paper. Signed by the artist and annotated TP lower left in pencil.
Oldenburg was a frequent Petersburg Press collaborator. There, he experimented with techniques such as sugar-lift and spitbite, in order to achieve a subtle counterpart to his spontaneous crayon and watercolor drawings. This print is a sugar-lift etching, in which acid is painted directly onto the plate, producing a painterly effect. The vibrant purple and green drawing of abstracted hats, bones, and the letter “Q,” is typical of Oldenburg’s playful subject matter and spontaneous mark-making.
