Oldenburg based Study for Tongue Cloud on a drawing he made in 1975 for a poster to benefit an arts festival in St. Louis. He pictured an enormous tongue coming out of a cloud, between St. Louis’ famous arch, and a piece of raisin bread. The sponsors of the festival rejected the design, on the grounds that it was inappropriate.
