“It is crucial to comprehend that Damon Davis’s work is not merely inspired by the Ferguson uprising, but a part of it, and of its effect on the arc toward justice. Photographed by Davis, scanned and commercially printed, these hands first proliferated as street art on the boarded-up storefronts of West Florissant in November 2014, to show solidarity with the people of Ferguson. In essence, they represent the first hands up in the effort to rebuild the community, the unjust conditions of which have steadily come to light in the glare of a national, even international spotlight. These are the hands of organizers, activists, children, clergymen, and operators of safe spaces representing the diversity of backgrounds, races, and genders unified in the face of oppression…”
