Dan Hillier Biography

Dan Hillier creates detailed artworks that invoke Victorian sensibility and mystical imagery. He uses collage and found imagery methods, combined with his own creations to forge unlikely characters that engage and unseat the sub-conscience.

Works are often the product of wide exploration, combining sourced illustrations from old books, layered with his own ink drawings and peppered with unexpected pieces to challenge the viewers imaginary. Hillier often creates series that enable the polymorphic creations from different piece to form a narrative when put into the context of the series as a whole.

Dream like beings, mythological type hybrids and Victorian freak-show characters are often the subject matter of the artist’s work. Religious iconography and representations of alternate planes of existence also feature heavily in Hillier’s works. The combined effect of his chosen forms showcase the possibilities of transcendence, other worldly experiences and the illogical.
