This vibrant image is a stellar example of Denzil Forrester’s depictions of dub and reggae clubs – a subject that has been central to his practice since the late 1970’s. “I’m interested in gesture as movement, action and expression,” the artist explains. “That’s why I still love going to nightclubs.” While many of the works that Forrester has made since moving to Cornwall in 2016 are dreamlike reflections on his childhood in Grenada, these sketches are snapshots of dynamic action, documenting Black British culture in the place that he lives and works.
