The print, built up with layers and bled to the edge, feels like a conte crayon drawings. Sultan’s Poppies are inspired by Remembrance Poppies, the paper poppies seen on wreathes or lapels, which emerged after World War I to commemorate those soldiers lost in battle. Eight layers of inks are combined with velvety black flocking to create a print that highlights Sultan’s sense of materiality and his fresh approach to the still life.
Yellow Poppies, September 12, 2013, works as a wonderful pair with the Red Poppies, March 21, 2012 or by itself.
