Zigrosser 22; Levin 82. Etching on wove paper, full margins. Signed in pencil.
Printed by Peter Platt and published in 1924 by The New Republic, New York, in an edition of ca. 500-600.
Night Shadows is an iconic subject for Hopper and considered one of his best prints. This is a special and rare opportunity to purchase the complete set of Six American Etchings, considering that most of these sets have been broken up. To my knowledge, only one American museum owns the complete set. Including a modernist etching by John Marin as well as more traditional etchings, all are in fine condition with full margins. Night Shadows is a nocturnal Manhattan scene with a solitary figure casting a long shadow, emphasising the sense of isolation for which Hopper is renowned. The start contrast of black and white also evokes a sense of mystery and loneliness.
