Schiefler-Mosel does not specify the number of prints for this state, but two copies for the first state. Very rare.
Self-portraits are rather rare in Nolde’s work. Moreover, as is so often the case with artists of his generation, they are hidden behind general titles such as “Head,” “Man,” or, as here, initials. This also happened with portraits of others. The results of this interrogation of the self and the other were intended to lead to general statements, to the representation of the human condition.
