One of the very few self-portraits in Nolde’s oeuvre that he actually titled with this title. The shape of the hat suggests rural life on Alsen, while the questionable look suggests whether he should take the step of renting a permanent apartment in the metropolis of Berlin. He did so in 1911 and from then on regularly spent the winters there with his wife Ada, depicting city life in his work. A daring but logical step, incidentally – without any direct connection, but nevertheless remarkable – concurrent with the definitive relocation of the “Brücke” artist group from Dresden to Berlin.

The Artist

Emil Nolde

Born in 1867, Emil Nolde was a German-Danish painter. Of the early 20th century painters, he was one of the first to explore colour with oil painting and watercolour. His watercolours are best known for their brilliant floras and vivid, brooding storm-scapes. In 1884 when he realised farm life was not for him, he studied to become a carver and illustrator.
