On ribbed laid paper. Proof coloured by the artist before the edition. Signed and dated lower right, inscribed ‘Kol’ lower left in paper margin.

The edition as a colour woodcut was published in ‘Die Schaffenden’, 7th vol. 2nd portfolio in 130 copies.

In the second half of the 1920s, Erich Heckel turned his attention to the circus, creating important clown portraits and circus scenes, such as the woodcut of a young, unknown clown in a three-quarter portrait in a circus tent. Heckel painted this woodcut in watercolours in completely different colours from those in which the edition was printed as a colour woodcut, here filling the entire pictorial space in a wonderful harmony of blue and violet.
