Printed in 65 Arabic-numbered copies on laid paper and in 35 Roman-numbered copies on Japan paper as sheet 4 of the portfolio “European Graphic Art V,” published by Edition Galerie Wolfgang Ketterer, edited by Felix H. Man, Munich 1967 (with blindstamp). A lithograph from the legendary original graphic editions of the great connoisseur and collector of artist lithography, Felix H. Man (Hans Baumann), in the Galerie Wolfgang Ketterer Stuttgart/Munich. In Heckel’s house in Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance, a series of objects, such as he always had around him in his studio for inspiration, are grouped around a central vase containing two rose branches. A figure—here, bottom right—must also always be present.

The Artist

Erich Heckel

Erich Heckel was the founding member of the group Die Brucke. He was born in 1883 in Germany and between 1897 and 1904 studied architecture in Dresden. He left shortly after the foundation of Die Brucke, where he was the secretary and treasurer. In 1907 he resigned from his architectural position to become a full time artist.
