Watermark: Fleur-de-lys; Provenance: W.E. Drugulin (Lugt 2612)
A fine impression, richly printed in the cave, foliage, and objects lower right. Thread margins all round and the corners beyond the arch intact. A couple of horizontal printer’s creases, chiefly invisible except on the saint’s upper arm. Otherwise in very fresh condition.
Choosing a subject dear to his master Rembrandt, who represented the hermit many times in both paint and etching, Bol created an image which a later publisher believed could be promoted as a work by the master himself. This impression is before the lightly-etched name on the bank was changed to “Rembrandt”.
