Sir Frank Bowling, 1934
Internationally renowned Modernist abstract painter based in London since 1953, Frank Bowling was born in colonial British Guyana. As early as 1966 he often maintained studios in New York City as well as London. Widely recognized critically since his solo exhibition, 1971, at the Whitney Museum of American Art and featured in the Venice Biennale, Bowling is the first Black artist to be elected Royal Academician, 2005, in the U.K. In 2008, he was honored by another exceptional award for his creative achievements: the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This 2013 commissioned limited edition etching, Ahaahead!, exemplifies the large lush, bright and painterly canvases for which his work is celebrated. His work is available from Hauser and Wirth.In 2019 Bowling was he subject of a hugely successful retrospective at Tate Britain and in 2022 opened a major show of works from 1966-1975 at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
