Colour woodcut in ochre and brown on pale green Velin paper. One of the artist’s proofs in two colours, hand printed from a single block. Second state.

From the group of prints of the woodcut on different types of paper and one cannot assume that a final print run was ever settled on. All impressions are “Sequence” or test prints and, therefore, unique.
This self portrait precedes an oil painting dating from 1900 (Lindeman 78) featuring the same three-quarter pose, the only difference being the length of the subject’s beard.
The work may be compared with early woodcuts by Cuno Amiet dating from 1904 and Giovanni Giacometti from 1907, though these were produced later than Sandreuter’s. Sandreuter was an early proponent of the Nabis School in Switzerland.
