Impression of the 1st state before the rework in drypoint doubling the woman’s ear and the lines over her shoulder.

Fine impression printed on laid paper. Very small tear of 4 mm on the left edge and a tiny stain, otherwise in excellent condition.

Provenance: Captain FACHOT (identified from 1796 until 1811), painter and collector: his mark in graphite on the reverse: C. fachot cap du génie (Lugt 4372) and inscription in his hand in pen bottom, difficult to decipher but ending with year 13 (probable mention of purchase in year 13, i.e. 1804-1805).

Harmensz van Rijn Rembrandt

Approximately 300 etchings and drypoints by Rembrandt were produced between 1626 and 1665. His work as a printmaker paralleled his career as a painter; he rarely dealt with the same subjects in both mediums, and he rarely made prints of his paintings. Above all, he was a brilliant experimenter and inventor in this field, frequently using standard materials in unexpected ways. His influence on printmaking is still visible in contemporary etchings.
