For an artist to be inspired by nature is not considered unusual, for an artist to translate their observations into images of equally stunning beauty is the domain of the exceptional artist, Henrik Simonsen is just such an artist.
For Simonsen, creating the work is an organic process; the elements and materials used are allowed to grow onto the canvas, each mark leading to the next until the work is completed. Layers of paint, inks and line work are built up, with marks made rarely being erased; the piece embraces it’s organic history which is important to Simonsen, who states “ It gives the painting a feel of having occupied a period in time”. Colour plays a significant role in Simonsen’s work, who, in his exploration of how paint and colour interact with drawn graphite lines, has produced works which truly envelop and absorb the viewer.
Simonsen describes his long term venture into the creation of original prints with Artizan Editions, as a developmental dialogue between paint and print offering inspirational learning to both mediums. The creation of screen print requires a fascinating, dissection of freehand mark making which Simonsen says has been “Fun to play around with and learn from, this has flowed back into my painting” and in turn Simonsen’s growing knowledge of colour choice and its impact on his paintings is in evidence in his original Screenprints.
Simonsen currently works from his studio in Berlin, exhibiting his work internationally, most notably in London, New York, Palm Beach and his native Denmark.
