Born in Manchester in 1953 and now based in Ireland, Hughie O’Donoghue has been exhibiting internationally since 1982, gaining a reputation as one of the leading painters of his generation. His paintings, prints and drawings reflect his deep identification with his father’s experiences as a soldier in World War II in Europe, with an equally profound homage to the heroic tradition in Western painting, and national history. His representations of the human body and the landscape tend to be highly abstracted.
