How to capture the natural landscape’s changing light and dramatic colour? Ian McNicol examines the subject with linear rhythm and painterly colourism in an image inspired by the contours of Ayrshire and Kirkcudbright.
Wee Abstract II is less committed to representation than other prints in the series. For the artist himself, “it explores a more experimental, cubist approach through simplified shape and form, leaning to abstraction and the unconscious.”
The medium of etching, and ‘A la Poupée’ inking method, result in subtle colour blends and variations across the editions.
McNicol exhibits widely within the UK, and has his work in collections of the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), Cleveland Art Museum, Collins Galleries, Clayton Hotels, Grasshoppers Hotel (Glasgow), and the British Council (Edinburgh).
