Etching, printed in dark brown/black ink with overall plate tone, 1858, published 1885; unnumbered from an edition of 67 known impression (Glasgow); pencil signed with the Whistler butterfly on tab, lower left; “Whistler” in plate, lower center-right image; pencil inscribed after the butterfly “imp”; “Imp. Delatre. Rue St. Jacques” in plate, lower right; ‘on verso in pencil: “a 39818”; printed by the artist with Auguste Delatre on antique ivory laid paper watermarked with Strasbourg lily; published by The Fine Art Society, state iii/iii.

A note on condition: old hinges on upper verso; stray drops of black/brown ink on verso; otherwise excellent.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Perhaps best known for a painting of his mother titled Whistler’s Mother, James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in Massachusetts but spent much of his time in Europe. Whistler is known as the father of Tonalism which is an artistic style marked by dark hues such as brown or blue and also emphasized mood and shadow.
