Etching, printed in black ink with plate tone; state ii/ii; pencil signed with a butterfly, lower left margin; signed with butterfly in the plate, lower left; pencil inscribed “K183 only state” and “The Little Venice”; 54 known impressions from two states; printed by the artist on antique ivory laid paper with large “1814/2” coat of arms watermark; published by the Fine Art Society.

A note on condition: slight staining within old mat opening. Slight impression where paper had been folded at the bottom, stop, and right margins; two small repairs in top margin; thin spot in upper margin with a tiny hole in the paper. Otherwise very clean and strong impression.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Perhaps best known for a painting of his mother titled Whistler’s Mother, James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in Massachusetts but spent much of his time in Europe. Whistler is known as the father of Tonalism which is an artistic style marked by dark hues such as brown or blue and also emphasized mood and shadow.
