Etching and drypoint, printed in black with plate tone; plate signed with butterfly, lower left; state v/v; pencil inscribed in lower left margin: “No 7”; 17 known impressions (Glasgow) from five states; plate cancelled, 1880; printed by Frank Goulding on antique ivory laid paper with large coat of arms watermark; published by Messrs Dowdeswell, 1880.

A note on the condition: old hinges on left verso; breaks at the platemark in both the upper and lower right; faint toning over image; otherwise a clean and strong impression.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Perhaps best known for a painting of his mother titled Whistler’s Mother, James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in Massachusetts but spent much of his time in Europe. Whistler is known as the father of Tonalism which is an artistic style marked by dark hues such as brown or blue and also emphasized mood and shadow.
