James Rosenquist has embraced printmaking as a vital creative form, developing an important body of work that explores and explodes traditional boundaries of aesthetic and technique. Dating from 1971, Graphicstudio has published over thirty etchings, lithographs, silkscreens, mixed-media prints and multiples in collaboration with Rosenquist.
The complexity of Rosenquist’s iconography lies in his constant reordering of elements to yield wholly different visual results each time — like combining notes on a musical scale. For After Berlin V, the artist draws upon his pop art background to produce a vibrant 10-color lithograph. The work was created after he completed Berlin V, a series of murals for the Berlin Guggenheim.
