“James Stroud studied with legendary printmaker Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris from 1980-1981. ‘Les nouveaux,’ as newcomers were called, were expected to participate in an engraving project following a set of directives from Hayter, ones designed to challenge each artist’s understanding of spatial possibilities of the plate. Once completed, each student was encouraged to continue working the plate and develop a more complex image. This print is the result of Stroud’s work from 37 years ago. Stroud recently discovered the plate in his studio archive and decided to print the definitive edition from it.”
