Beginning his career as a photorealist and then shifting primarily to abstraction, Jay Kelly explores the relationship between randomness and calculation in his work. Each image is deceptively simplistic and ordinary, but then refuses to resolve into a static design that can be identified at a glance, compelling the viewer to stop and think about the impact of symbols.
