Superhero Portfolio is a compilation of four hand-pulled screenprints on paper created by the legendary neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat from 1982-1987. The portfolio was later released by the artist’s estate in 2022 in a limited edition run of 85. The four pieces are tied to one another through their unique depictions of various classic American superheroes, from Batman to The Flash. Characteristically cryptic in meaning, these pieces subtly reveal the iconic artist’s internal world and psyche while retaining the style and charisma that is so distinctively Basquiat. Across the four pieces, the artist creates hand-scrawled messages, whimsical illustrations, and a youthful palette. Loose grids, lattices, dots, and scribbles create texture and dimension while Basquiat’s subjects challenge tradition. The limited edition screenprints each measure 40 inches tall by 40 inches, and they are stamped, authenticated, and signed on verso by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist’s sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
