Jim Dine’s vivid, candid and detailed reminiscences about his friendship and working relationship with Aldo Crommelynck (1931-2008), the legendary printer of Matisse and Picasso, over a period of more than 30 years are full of affection, humour and layer upon layer of information.

In conversations with Marco Livingstone, Dine charts the extent to which his experience of working with Aldo, a man who was not only a great printer but also a skilled draughtsman, enriched his experience of France on every level. From an appreciation of its art and culture, its city life and countryside, to its food and its specialist shops, Dine’s ruminations also take some unexpected but illuminating detours that prove deeply revealing of the specific nature of his love for France and of his many debts to an esteemed colleague, fellow traveller and much loved friend.

The slipcased de luxe edition consists of 75 numbered copies. Each copy is accompanied by a signed original etching by Jim Dine entitled Aldo Crommelynck Now. Printed in New York on 300gsm Hahnemühle copperplate warm white paper, the etching measures 355 x 300 mm.

The Artist

Jim Dine

Jim Dine is an American pop artist who was born in Ohio in 1935 and was known for his painting, drawing, sculpting and printmaking. He is considered to be a part of the Neo-Dada movement, a style that opposed the emotional expressions of Abstract Impressionism and instead, denies aesthetics by using mundane subjects and focusing on performance. Dine was first recognised by the art industry when he displayed ‘Happenings’ a type of performance art in collaboration with the musician John Cage. In 1959, it was exhibited over six days in an environment or installation in New York City’s Reuben Gallery, where features of light, sound, projects and viewer participation all played a part in the display.
