Joan Snyder (born April 16, 1940) is an American painter. The raw sentiment of Joan Snyder’s prints and paintings is manifested through her strident and impulsive expressionist bruskstroke. She uses corporeal imagery as a platform to express herself and “pull art out of flesh”. By layering text over energetic dashes of color and the forms of the body, Snyder imparts her coherent and primal statements on identity, emotion, resilience and resolution. Joan Snyder has had numerous solo exhibitions, with recent shows at the Jewish Museum, New York (2005-2006), the Brooklyn Museum of Art (1998), and the Betty Cunningham Gallery, New York. Snyder’s work is widely collected and can be found in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston); Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney (New York); and the Fogg Art Museum (Harvard). She is a MacArthur Fellow and a Guggenheim Fellow.
