Johannes Wohnseifer works in a variety of media, and his work includes paintings, sculptures, videos, photos, installations, artist books, posters and editions. These numerous artistic forms are accompanied by similarly diverse content-related references. Wohnseifer’s works revolve around pop culture, the world of goods, corporate branding, the fetishization of consumption, history or politics. There is always a profound interest in contemporary visual culture. Typefaces have been one of Wohnseifer’s central groups of works for many years. The artist mostly uses the late modern, matter-of-fact typeface ‘Helvetica’ in paintings and graphics. Wohnseifer’s typefaces, like many of his other works, have two sides – industrial-looking sobriety meets a ‘warm’ or ‘human’ artistic style. Our edition shows the English-language list of eleven professions on a white cardboard in A2 landscape format. The professions from the fields of art, media, politics, science, religion and sport are very diverse. However, they all belong to the professions that are associated with commitment, a love of experimentation and a willingness to perform, as well as reputation and success. However, power and its abuse can also be associated with them. Another possible commonality among them would be the (potential) notoriety of those named, their (possible) ‘fame’. Johannes Wohnseifer has reworked the individual sheets in different colors so that two professions remain untouched as recesses, the other nine are painted over but still remain legible. 55 pairs are thus created from the pool of eleven activities. This reflection on the similarities, the differences, or the potential for an exchange between these 55 pairs is the invitation that Johannes Wohnseifer extends with our edition.

The Artist

Johannes Wohnseifer

Johannes Wohnseifer (born 1967 in Cologne, lives in Erfstadt, Professor for painting and sculpture at KHM/Academy of Media Arts Cologne) links the everyday with history, art and science themes and thus makes the imperceptible apparent. He questions to what extent art represents or critically explores the images of society. In order to achieve his objective, he dips into the wealth of materials and techniques offered by paintings, sculptures or posters. The “Faded Flags”, his very first Edition for Provinz, is seemingly a ready-made, here in the form of an industrially produced German flag. In actuality, Johannes Wohnseifer has fiddled with its color saturation. Like the “white” American flag on the moon—once a luminous symbol of that nation’s technical accomplishments—the black-red- gold that identifies and represents Germany has paled and almost disappeared, as if gnawed on by the wheel of time.
