This woodcut print, created by Cardiff based artist John Abell, is based on a work by the artist James Cope. Little is known about Cope except that he was born in Caernarvonshire in 1805 or 1806…and that he was living in Caernarvon in 1841. The area was a centre of political and religious radicalism at the time. John Jones, the publisher of the image, started printing at Trefriw before moving to Llanwrst in 1825.Cope holds back little in his picture of The Tories being taken home to their family. The work was originally printed by John Abell on a t-shirt and sold as a fundraiser for Food Banks serving the Rhondda Valleys in about 2022. Note the woodcut carving is shared here for information/interest…it’s the print itself thats for sale!!
