Etching with Chine-Collé

John McLean’s practice as a painter is rooted in a fine colour sensibility. When collaborating with Peacock to realise prints, this attention translates to meticulous care in every step of the printmaking process, from diluting and applying inks, to applying the right amount of pressure. The extremely balanced, carefully composed works in the ‘Granite Suite’ series, of which this work is part, concentrate their rhythmic compositions into a relatively small scale, releasing their vibrancy into their surroundings.

Used to seeing granite in Aberdeen as a hefty, sharp building stone, McLean’s print instead teases out the subtle glimmers and plays of light on the stone through its balanced composition and subtle palette.
