Hand cut woodblock / lithograph
Includes wood frame artist designed and a 14-minute video cassette
Video / Print presents video with print and sculpture: a videotape is shown accompanied by a print enclosed by an incised wooden frame designed by the artist. The print combines various techniques: handcarved woodblock, videocapture, and photolithography. This work is innovative in its mix of ancient and recent technology. The video was edited digitally by Restrepo, who also composed the original soundtrack. Also digitally created was the central image in the print, taken by videocapture from the tape and altered by the artist by means of a computer program.
Conceptually, this work ponders the technological, historical, and political affinities between woodblock and video. In doing so, it examines the ways in which methods of transmission of knowledge have formed and affected relationships between the Old World and the New World, specifically Latin America and Europe. It is also a deeply personal and lyrical meditation upon his homeland of Colombia.
