Kai Althoff Biography

Born in 1966 in Cologne, lives in New York and Cologne.

Althoff’s work includes artistic activities such as painting, drawing, sculpture, writing, installation, performance, theatre, music and film.

From the mid-1990s, Althoff presented his works in various group and solo exhibitions, initially in Germany, later also in Switzerland, the United States and Canada.

In 2010, Althoff canceled his participation in Documenta 13 at short notice, and his handwritten letter of rejection became a work of art. In 2016, he put together 200 paintings, collages, sculptures and videos from three decades at MoMA to create a total work of art.

In addition to his artistic work, Althoff is also active as a musician. In addition to solo albums under artist names such as Fanal or Ashley’s, he released works together with Justus Köhncke as Subtle Tease and with Christoph Rath, Stefan Mohr and Stephan Abry as Workshop.

Althoff lived and worked for a long time in his hometown of Cologne before moving to New York City.
