Commissioned by Elle, Kate Garner photographed a recently discovered starlet by the name of Angelina Jolie, who was coming off her first widely-known movies, Hackers and Without Evidence. A very nude Jolie, with ankles wrapped together in an S&M pose, stares intently toward the ground as her knees are brought up to cover her chest. Such a provocative and striking black-and-white image was born out of collaboration, with Jolie having the idea of grabbing the rope to tie herself into the pose with no input from Garner who simultaneously captured the intense independence exuding from her subject.
