Hamanishi (b. 1949) is an internationally established Japanese mezzotint artist who is considered to be “the artist’s artist” in this very demanding technique. He has explored the
rich, dark three-dimensional effects achievable with the old European mezzotint technique, and here he applies it to the beautiful image of a bridge and lotus flowers which have been painstakingly burnished on the plate. Note the play on shadows in the water. His works are in the permanent collections of top museums including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum (NY), and Art Institute of Chicago. In 2012, his works were shown with the master mezzotint Yozo Hamaguchi at the Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC.
