Magnus Gjoen’s evocative work treads a fascinating line between humour and horror. By offering a modern take on old masterpieces, and transforming items typically associated with violence into delicate works of art, Gjoen challenges our preconceived notions of beauty. His work combines Street Art, Pop Art and Fine Art sensibilities, and highlights humanity’s capacity for creating immense beauty one minute, and mass destruction the next.

In About the Dead, Either Well or Nothing, Gjoen remasters an 18th century oil painting that he bought at auction. By keeping the historical references in his work, and adding modern flourishes like vibrant colours and gold leaf, the artist creates a sublime balance between old and new. The piece is a comment on the artistic license we tend to apply when remembering the past.

This giclee print is hand-finished with 24k golf leaf. It is from a limited edition of 10, signed and numbered by the artist.

The Artist

Magnus Gjoen

Magnus Gjoen’s works examines how to change peoples relationship and preconceived notions of objects. Something which is potentially extremely destructive can be made into beautiful yet fragile objects of art. It’s this misconception of beauty which Magnus Gjoen wants us to see in a different light, be it weapons, animals or the human race itself. The latter is capable of creating immense beauty but also capable of destroying it all. Taking inspiration from street and pop art and juxtapositioning it with fine art, he creates new and modern takes on old masterpieces, manipulating something powerful and strong into something fragile but beautiful. He often questions the correlation between religion, war, beauty & destruction in his art. Magnus Gjoen was born in London to Norwegian parents and studied design in London and Milan and has worked as a denim designer and graphic designer before embarking on a career as an artist.
