Homer’s Odyssey recounts the adventures of the Greek hero Ulysses (son of the king of Ithaca, husband of Penelope, and father of Telemachus) on his journey home, beset by adversity, to the island of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy. He suffered the enmity of Poseidon after blinding his son, the one-eyed giant Polyphemus; his travels were therefore liable to be interrupted by storm and shipwreck caused by the vindictive sea-god. En route Ulysses and his companions encountered the Sirens, bird-like creatures with the heads of women, who drew sailors to their death with their irresistible, magic songs.
