On Vegetarianism derives from Quinn’s renowned series of Fleshpaintings, which have been produced by the artist over a number of years and reflect the recurring themes from his oeuvre: life and death, heroism and suffering, and the physical and psychological boundaries of human beings. The paintings themselves both attract and repel, and to Quinn they are about the inherent duality of the human condition. As Quinn says, “a person can be repelled by the idea of killing an animal and seeing their flesh, but that same person can order a steak in a restaurant and enjoy it… it’s one of the ways humans cope with the world and it is a moral paradox.”
