Arty-Fact: When Markus was commissioned to shoot the cover of an album titled Elephunk, ideas of an elaborate shoot involving a real-life elephant in the streets of New York flowed. However, this was soon after 9/11, and among the city’s new ordinances were laws specifically requiring elephants to be accompanied by sharpshooters on the roofs of buildings all around, and blocking off city blocks, in case the elephant went wild. The set-up would have cost upwards of a million dollars in insurance and rental fees.
A much simpler portrait session with The Black Eyed Peas was planned instead. The four photos Markus shot of the members were used as elements on the album cover of Elephunk.
Female vocalist Fergie was brand new to the group and relatively unknown, but that would soon change. Featuring the hit tracks “Where is the Love” and “Let’s Get It Started, ” Elephunk would reach platinum status and Fergie would become one of the most popular singers in the world, and it all started with this shoot. Markus recalls, “It was fascinating to see Fergie learning the trademark Black Eyed Peas moves along with the other amazing dancers, right there on the set of our photo shoot.”
